Researchers have published new information about a malicious campaign targeting government agencies, military organizations and civilian entities in Ukraine and Poland. From at least April 2022 until this month, hackers attempted to infiltrate victims’ devices to steal information and gain permanent remote access, according to a new report released by cybersecurity firm Cisco Talos. The researchers did not disclose the extent of the impact of the attacks. Cisco Talos noted that Ukraine’s computer emergency response team (CERT-UA) recently attributed the July incidents to the hacker group UNC1151, also known as GhostWriter, which has been linked to the Belarusian government. CERT-UA’s…
First-aid workers drafted in to treat visitors suffering effects of 48C – 118F –temperatures at the country’s most visited monument The Greeks know a thing or two about heat, and they know a thing or two about dealing with it. But last week saw heat of an altogether different order. Temperatures were of such magnitude that they called for measures never before seen in a country that prides itself on being the first in Europe to have appointed an official dedicated solely to dealing with the challenges of global heating. And so it was that at noon on Friday the Acropolis…

Germany will provide Ukraine with additional military aid worth almost $3bn, including tanks, anti-aircraft systems and ammunition, the government announced ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s arrival in Berlin. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Saturday that Berlin wanted to show, with its latest military aid package worth 2.7bn euros ($2.95bn), “that Germany is serious in its support” for Ukraine. “Germany will provide all the help it can, as long as it takes,” he said. Though initially slow to provide military aid to Kyiv, Germany has since become one of the biggest suppliers of arms to Ukraine, crucially giving…
Tourism in Italy has rebounded from COVID-19 lows but not everybody is happy to see the crowds of foreigners back. Botticielli’s Venus is largely acknowledged as a Renaissance masterpiece but she has now been reimagined as a modern-day influencer as part of a campaign to attract foreign visitors to Italy that has once more sparked the debate about over-tourism. The Greek goddess, painted in the 15th century, can now be seen travelling across Italy and posting selfies on Instagram of herself eating pizza, taking in the Roman and Venetian sights, or cycling on the Costa dei Trabocchi. The €9 million…
The European Commission will provide Turkey with €1 billion to help with “post-earthquake reconstruction” following the deadly quakes that killed tens of thousands in February, Ursula von der Leyen said Monday. “No one can fill the void left by those who lost their lives, yet together we can reconstruct and rebuild,” the Commission president said ahead of a donors’ conference in Brussels. She called for “homes, schools and hospitals” destroyed in the earthquakes to be rebuilt “with the highest standards of seismic safety.” More than 50,000 people died in Turkey and Syria after a series of powerful earthquakes hit southeastern Turkey in February.…
At the end of February, Ivan, who lives in the settlement of Volchikha in Siberia’s Altai region, got a phone call from his best friend, a mobilized soldier named Andrei who was serving in Ukraine. Although the two had been in regular contact since Andrei was called up, it had been more than a week since they had last spoken. “I’ll never forget that phone call,” Ivan told RFE/RL. “It was the first time I’d heard his voice trembling: ‘Man, I don’t know how I survived. I’m the only one of my group still alive.’ A grown man sobbed for nearly…
December 13, 1943 marks the date of the worst massacre committed in Greece by the Nazis occupying the country, as more than five hundred innocent civilians were executed, and the entire town of Kalavryta was burned to the ground. The Massacre of Kalavryta, also known as the Holocaust of Kalavryta, was carried out by the German Army’s 117th Jäger Division. The extermination of the male population of Kalavryta was in retaliation for the execution of sixty-eight German soldiers who had been captured by the Greek Resistance. “Operation Kalavryta,” or “Unternehmen Kalavryta,” was a typical German act of retaliation in areas where there…
