For the summer of 2024, FlixTrain plans to further increase the number of trips between cities in Germany, and will serve new destinations. Thanks to a more frequent timetable and longer trains with more seats, the company is expanding its long-distance transport offering by 25 per cent.
The 2024 timetable also adds some new destinations. As of the timetable change on December 10th, FlixTrain will also transport travellers to and from Bremen, Bensheim, Elsterwerda, Mülheim (Ruhr) and Müllheim (Baden) as well as Schönefeld in the immediate vicinity of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. FlixTrain is also back in many cities that had to be temporarily paused for reasons relating to infrastructure: Offenbach, Mainz, Hanau and Wolfsburg will be back on the network in spring 2024.
The most popular travel destinations include Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Heidelberg and Leipzig, according to Flix. The operator also strengthens direct connections on long-distance rail transport, especially between the east and west of Germany, such as Hamburg-Leipzig, Heidelberg-Berlin and Darmstadt-Eisenach.
FlixTrain offers people in Germany long-distance rail transport, including a guaranteed seat at no extra charge and travel times at “ICE level”, clearly aiming at competing with Deutsche Bahn offers. Despite its competitors, Deutsche Bahn still dominates long-distance transport with a market share of 96 per cent in 2021, according to the latest Railway Market Analysis of the Budnesnetzagentur. The 4 per cent market share of competitors also includes the foreign state-owned railways such as ÖBB which also operates night trains, and SNCF trains connecting France to Germany.
